Promises…promises!

“I promise I won’t let anything happen to you.” “I promise I won’t ever leave you.” “I won’t let anyone ever hurt you again, I promise you.” “…in sickness and in health, in the good times and bad…until death do us part.”

“I promise I won’t let anything happen to you.”  “I promise I won’t ever leave you.”  “I won’t let anyone ever hurt you again, I promise you.”  “…in sickness and in health, in the good times and bad…until death do us part.”  Promises..!  I hear people promising on TV, in podiums, at church, at work, at the bedside of someone sick…everywhere.  Why do we persist on promising things we can’t possibly deliver?  Why not say instead:  “I will do my outmost to protect you so that you don’t get seriously hurt, but a lot will depend on your own decisions.”  Or “Bad things will happen in your life, but I hope I am there for you when you are affected by them.”  “Even when I am not around, know that you are always in my mind and heart.”  And at weddings…why not say: “…in sickness, and in health, in good…
